School Business Affairs June 2019

publisher’s message 6 JUNE 2019 | SCHOOL BUSINESS AFFAIRS SBOS SHARING Whenever I have the opportunity to spend time with our members, I am always impressed by how willing they are to share best practices with each other. ASBO International’s Global School Business Network is one of the communication tools we provide to members so they can do that and more. The network gives you the ability to access school business officials who face the same challenges you have and those who have solved the problems you are facing— not just in your school district, state, province, or country, but worldwide. This month we are sharing a crowdfunding toolkit through the Global School Business Network. For a sneak peak of what’s in the toolkit, take a look at this issue’s insert. On to this month’s articles. Anya Bailey Randle, a CFO in Louisiana, provides an overview of how school busi- ness officials communicate to their stakeholders through finance documents and provides guidance on how to edu- cate the community about the school district’s goals, bud- gets, and vision so everyone speaks the same language. Zac Rantz and Danielle McGuire, school communica- tions specialists in Missouri, provide strategies for build- ing trust using social media, and former SBO and now professor Craig Schilling explains how to master the basics of public speaking. Presenter Porter Knight shares the importance of saying “no” when necessary—and how to do it. Thinking about blogging? WorkingSBM, a UK school business manager, shares the steps to “boldly go” into the blogosphere. Additional features focus on weaving communica- tion skills with sustainability advocacy (Richard Weeks), ways one district is transforming education by creating pathways to learning (Justin Miller), the value of visit- ing classrooms (Scott Clay), the evolution of the school library, cybersecurity, and the legal aspects of social media. We also highlight MBA/Pathway recipients for 2018/2019 and recognize our amazing strategic partners. — Siobhán McMahon, CAE Colophon: Siobhán enjoyed spring break with her family and started puppy classes with Penny the Boston Terrier; Pat over- bought at the first farmer’s market of the season; and Laura flew east for a family wedding.
