By Patty Bedborough, CPA, SFO “ R esponsibly and efficiently allocate resources including finances, facilities, personnel and time” is one of the strategic goals Parkway School District is pursuing as we partici- pate in the Better Building Challenge sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. Erik Lueders, Parkway’s director of sustainability and purchasing, gave us the opportunity to become part of the Better Building Challenge program in 2015. As a participant, the district committed to working toward a 20% reduction in energy use and water consumption over 10 years. That commitment is paying off. The district, located in Chesterfield, Missouri, has reduced its energy use by 13% since 2015 (see Figure 1) by improving the heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems; seal- ing building envelopes; installing higher-value insulation as roofs are replaced; decreasing energy use in buildings by controlling systems’ operating times each day; con- verting to propane buses; and more. The facilities department adopted the ASHRAE 50% energy savings standard when replacing HVAC equip- ment and renovating buildings.
