School Business Affairs February 2020

publisher’s message 6 FEBRUARY 2020 | SCHOOL BUSINESS AFFAIRS asbointl.org SAFE AND SECURE? The media reminds us every day that the world isn’t as safe and secure as it was for our parents and grandparents. That knowledge simply makes us more committed than ever to do all we can to keep our schools secure and our staff and students safe from harm. School safety has been a consis- tent theme in School Business Affairs for several years, attesting to its importance. In this issue we offer a variety of proven strategies to help districts provide safe and secure learning environments, including Portland (Ore- gon) Public Schools’ comprehensive approach to school safety and emergency preparedness, basic security mea- sures that are effective without breaking the bank, and the emergency preparedness and communications plan in Pennsylvania’s Upper Moreland School District. We switch gears but stay focused on security with two articles about data. Learn why it’s the best of times and the worst of times in the area of data safety and security and what best practices can help your district stay posi- tive. Be sure to find out if your schools have the charac- teristics that promote information security and how to proceed if they don’t. Staff and student mental health should be at the top of every district’s list of priorities. There’s no question that’s the case in Oklahoma City, where the district has part- nered with several community organizations to address the mental health crisis. Molly Fleming of the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce shares their story, which is making an impact state-wide. In keeping with our commitment to provide a wide range of topics in each issue, we also offer articles on navigating the new face of “inclusion,” empathic leader- ship, rural broadband, and top Supreme Court cases. And don’t miss our special article about how the Eagle Award scholarship has made a difference in students’ lives. — Siobhán McMahon, CAE Colophon: During production of this issue, Siobhán celebrated her oldest getting her driving license and then realized the sleepless nights begin again, Pat enjoyed 65-degree weather in mid-January, and Laura relished a cozy snow-bound weekend reading The Weight of Ink.
