School Business Affairs June 2020

publisher’s message 6 JUNE 2020 | SCHOOL BUSINESS AFFAIRS asbointl.org COMMUNICATING IN CHALLENGING TIMES In this issue you will find a balance of COVID-19-related articles and originally scheduled articles. We are committed to providing you with articles that are relevant during this pandemic and those that you will find beneficial when we are through this crisis. We are all in this together. As I write this, ASBO HQ staff are wrapping up our ninth week in a virtual work environ- ment. Not only are we communicating solely by email, telephone, and videoconferencing, our overall focus has shifted significantly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. We, like many of you, have been on more Zoom, Teams, video, and conference calls in the past nine weeks alone than we have over the entirety of the past few years. Our discussions focus on questions such as: What do our mem- bers need right now? How can we support our mission and the profession? How do we ensure we are providing vitally important information to help them do their jobs? Our education department has moved swiftly. Webi- nars were updated to focus on COVID-19 and are offered at no cost to the profession. We are working with our Education Committee and Editorial Advisory Com- mittee to identify Round Table discussions for members. We opened our blog to members and nonmembers, focusing on a Coronavirus Update: What Should SBOs Know? This blog is updated almost daily. On our ASBO Network, our members are sharing how-to guides on reopening the workplace, questions and answers on elec- tronic payments and invoicing, details about retirement incentive programs, and more. Our legislative department has been working closely with our Legislative Advisory Committee and other national education associations groups, including AFT, NEA, AASA, NAESP, NASSP, NSBA, NASBE, National PTA, and CCSSO, to advocate for our schools right now. We also have been in regular communications with international education leaders around the world. I Zoom into a weekly call with the members of the Institute of School Business Leadership, which has participants from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the U.S., England, South Africa, and more. Turn to page 30 for a snapshot of just some of the topics the executive directors of the Canadian ASBO affiliates discussed at the beginning of May. We will continue to share as much information as we can. Please let us know how we, your professional asso- ciation, can help. Colophon: During production of this issue, Siobhan celebrated her daughter’s 15th birthday and the joys of leftover cake, Pat discovered Nutella oatmeal cookies, and Laura enjoyed the spring breeze on her screened porch.
