School Business Affairs October 2020

publisher’s message 6 OCTOBER 2020 | SCHOOL BUSINESS AFFAIRS LEADERS OF THE YEAR I hope this month’s cover caught your eye! For a decade, we have featured on the cover of our leadership-themed issue of SBA an ASBO International member who personifies exemplary leadership. This year, quite frankly, there have just been too many of you to fit on the cover! We, your HQ staff, have always valued what you bring to the table. In 2020 that value was recognized and acknowledged as the country ground to a halt. In March, on the twist of a dime, as schools closed, you figured out how to feed the kids in your districts who relied on the school for their only meal each day. By April you were addressing myriad effects COVID-19 was having on your employees. By May you were facing the financial impact head-on and were advocating for school district dollars. In June you were sharing your expertise and leadership with your transportation teams and by July you were chal- lenging resource equity and driving Wi-Fi-equipped school busses to neighborhoods that lacked broadband access. You were prioritizing our youngest students and those with special needs and devising reopening plans for the fall. All the while, you shared your triumphs and challenges with your colleagues across your district, state, province, country, and around the world. You shared your school reopening plans and discussed the impacts of payroll tax deferral. You worked with your payroll team on elec- tronic payments and invoice requirements. You shared your knowledge with superintendents and school boards and parents and members of your community. We have been blown away by your strength, positivity, exemplary leadership, courage, teamwork, problem solv- ing, integrity, and passionate and undaunted mission to ensure all students are able to continue learning in a safe environment. The ASBO International staff members have always known the value of the role you play in our communities, but over the last several months the public spotlight has been on you and you have led. Now your communities know what we’ve always known. So, when it came to my favorite cover of the year, how could we spotlight just one leader? We dedicate this issue to you, to all of you, to school business professionals around the world. You truly are school business champions. — Siobhán McMahon, CAE Colophon: During production of this issue, Siobhán attended her cousin MK’s virtual surprise baby shower and celebrated her oldest daughter’s 17th birthday, Pat reluctantly closed the swimming pool for the summer, and Laura planted some native trees and shrubs.
