School Business Affairs January 2021

publisher’s message 6 JANUARY 2021 | SCHOOL BUSINESS AFFAIRS asbointl.org LOOKING AHEAD WITH OPTIMISM Didn’t 2020 seem like a very long year? Although our recollections of the past 12 months will forever include the havoc COVID-19 wrecked on our world, our communities, and our friends and families, we can now turn our sights to 2021. While the new year will not be smooth sailing, it does offer a new beginning of sorts, and an opportunity to accentuate the positive. Those positives in the school business profession include our communities’ recognition of the amazing role that school business leaders have played and will con- tinue to play in ensuring our students and staff stay safe and healthy and that they have the resources they need as we continue to navigate the constantly changing educa- tion environment. As you read through this month’s issue of School Busi- ness Affairs , you’ll learn about the extraordinary things your fellow SBOs are doing in their districts, from fight- ing social injustice to connecting with “missing” students during the pandemic, to ensuring effective budgeting during uncertain times. We also highlight the innovative programs of our Pinnacle Award winners on page 32. I’ve said it many times and I’ll say it again: You are the Leaders of the Year. Your voices in advocating for our nation’s students have been heard in state legislatures and on Capitol Hill over and over these past several months, and that has certainly laid the foundation for what we know will be a positive relationship with the newWhite House administration. (Don’t miss Elleka Yost’s article on page 26 for a rundown.) ASBO International HQ staff members are looking forward to 2021 with excitement and optimism as we continue to roll out our new membership model, which helps us provide support for more school business profes- sionals than ever before, and increase our professional development offerings through roundtables and webinars, micro courses, and more on our new ASBO Learn. With regard to our signature professional development events for 2021—the Annual Meeting & Expo, Winter Conference, Eagle Institute, and Legislative Advisory Conference—we will continue to monitor the situation and base our decisions to have virtual and/or in-person events based on our commitment to keeping our mem- bers safe. Regardless, we promise you top-quality profes- sional development offerings and myriad opportunities to connect with your colleagues all over the world. We look forward to continuing to move the school business profession forward in 2021. — Siobhán McMahon, CAE Colophon: During production of this issue, Siobhán discovered the joys of a good fire-pit with a glass of Malbec, Pat took up needlepoint, and Laura fostered three adorable kittens.
