By Brianne Dunn, JD T he past year brought unprecedented challenges to school districts, as teachers, students, admin- istrators, and district personnel began working and learning in modified settings to adjust to the global spread of COVID-19. In Illinois, even before the spread of coronavirus, the landscape of workplace policies and practices was changing as a result of the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, which went into effect January 1, 2020, legalizing recreational marijuana. One year later, while school districts and employers continue to adjust to the changes brought forth by the law, they are challenged even more by the remote work and learning settings that have provided an additional layer of complexity for school districts seeking to imple- ment workplace drug-use policies and practices. School leaders and district personnel in states with similar marijuana laws can stay ahead of the curve by knowing the fundamentals of the laws and establishing best practices for implementing their policies.
